• Cisco Fully Acquires Insieme Networks

Cisco Systems announced on Nov. 6, 2013 that it will fully acquire its software-defined-networking (SDN) incubator company Insieme Networks as it is looking to grow its SDN capabilities and fend off competitors such as VMware.

"We are announcing today that Cisco is acquiring the remaining minority interest in Insieme, and I would like to welcome the founders and entire Insieme team to Cisco," said Rob Lloyd, Cisco's President of Development and Sales.

Cisco owned 85% of Insieme and has made over $135 million in investments in a little over a year and a half - $100 million capital infusion in April 2012 and an additional $35 million investment in November 2012.

Cisco CEO John Chambers noted "the concept of software-defined networks is really interesting because it talks about programmability, flexibility, etc." Cisco also claims ACI reduces application deployment times from "months to minutes" while providing real-time visibility into physical and virtual infrastructures.
